Brush Lettering

Have you ever tried brush lettering, faux calligraphy, or traditional calligraphy? I took a class recently on brush lettering in our town and it was wonderful!  I grew up learning both cursive and print, and have always loved writing, but I never put much thought into my handwriting before, and I never thought I could make my writing beautiful. This class changed my mind! Brush lettering is not only fun, but it becomes fairly natural the more you do it. The basic idea is to mimic the look behind calligraphy, where you press harder on your downstrokes to get a thicker line there.  Traditional copperplate calligraphy is very much rule-based, which can be satisfying in its own way because it yields such a beautiful result. The idea behind brush or bounce lettering, on the other hand, is to be playful with your letters and let your own signature font shine through. This is my wheelhouse so far, though I'd love to learn traditional copperplate some day too. Stay tuned for a few examples of my progress. Let me know in the comments if you've ever tried brush lettering or calligraphy, and what some of your favorite tools are!

Warm regards,

Jessica
